Wilma Martin Obituary

Wilma Martin started her incredible earthly journey on June 12th, 1916, in Fountain Inn S.C. She was the eldest of four daughters born to the late Coy and Letha Wright Martin.

She was a Homemaker who developed her love of cooking and baking. She was also gifted with a green thumb and was known for creating breathtaking gardens. She won awards for the best flower garden in her neighborhood where she also drew people from all over with the smell of freshly baked Hoe Cake Bread that was often paired with molasses and whipped butter. Affectionately known as “Ma Wilma” she was an expert teacher of how to pick blackberries while avoiding snakes and pulling Polk salad from the woods that all turned into Sunday dinners that were the talk of the town.

Her hand raised and guided many during her lifetime and they often returned to thank her. She was a woman who loved Jesus and was never shy about telling whoever would listen, how good He was. She was a Prayer Warrior who prayed for and covered her family with passion. She also loved to dance, shout and sing (off tune) yet powerful.

She loved her children, who extend through four generations, dearly and she didn’t spare the rod when needed. But even then, there was still peppermint candy waiting in the wings.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by son, Robert Coy Martin; sisters, Verna McGowan, Louise Cox, and Levenia Harris; grandson, Bruce Sullivan Jr. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Carol Sullivan; dearest nieces, Nancy Stover and Daisy Mae Cox; dearest nephew, W.C.-Mousau-Cox; granddaughters, Selina Jones (Andre), Joy Moore, Lasheba Dixon (Derrick), Shawanna Webb, Patrice Barrett (Jacob); 14 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews extending through four generations.
